HOW TO SUBMIT: Literature

  • While there are no hard rules about (sub)genre:
    • Fiction should generally fit TJJS’ vibe – think commentary, criticism, and comedic relief
      • This can include fantasy, sci-fi, slice-of-life, action, adventure, historical, horror, etc.
    • Non-fiction should be relevant to TJJS’ themes and mission statement
      • Essays can be personal, critical, persuasive, argumentative, analytical, scholarly, etc.
      • “Excerpts” can be diary entries, opinion pieces, snapshot memoirs, etc.
    • Poetry should be aligned with TJJS’ goals
      • Poetry can be free-verse or formal; narrative, stream-of-consciousness, prose, concrete/shape, sestina, sonnet, etc.

  • All literature must adhere to TJJS’ Code of Ethics
    • Sex, violence, and expletives are not outright prohibited – in fact, they are encouraged – but excessive, unnecessary, or distasteful use of these devices can result in your submission being rejected
  • You might receive a conditional acceptance – this means that your piece will be sent back to you with notes requesting specific edits
    • You may choose to make some, all, or none of the requested edits
    • If you choose to not to edit your submission, you may receive an automatic rejection
    • If you choose to make some or all of the requested edits, your piece will be reviewed again and you will receive an email with the final decision
  • All literature should be submitted as a PDF attached to your submission email, NOT a share link
